The world of web hosting services
So you're on the yellow brick road of web hosting services. If you're a newbie at all of this then there is a chance that the entire lingo can seem a bit overwhelming sometimes. If you're a more seasoned web designer, user, surfer then you may have a little better grip on web hosting services.
There are literally hundreds of new web hosting companies opening for business each week. Some are in it for the long haul, and some see a pie in the sky dream of dollars rolling in month after month from clients. So obviously it's important not to fall in with a flash in the pan web hosting provider. So how do you do that?
First off a site like ours offers a great service for you to search and compare several web hosting services at once. Since we're not a hosting provider ourselves, we're not trying to push our visitors in any one direction. This ensures you're getting unbiased information, while if you were using a search engine such as Google, or MSN you're at the mercy of search results as to what companies you find along the way.
A couple of important points to be aware:
Don't just go for the lowest cost web hosting services provider.
Why? Well an easy way to try and gain clients is to buy business. With a low cost plan of three to five dollars per month, of course a company will gain some clients; but can they sustain a successful business by charging so little? You want to be with a stable company that will be your business partner for the long haul.
Don't get sucked into fancy long lists of features.
There are some sites that like to list every single item they have available as a feature on their web hosting plans. Are these items features? Sure they are, the better question is Do these features offer benefits to you the customer? Most of the time NO. We cover a lot of different web hosting terms and items in our glossary, but they aren't all required for every user.
When you're looking for you web hosting services, have a good idea of what it is you need from the get go, and what you may need in the future.
Example: Today you're a basic five page HTML website for your business selling Widgets. In two years, you've built up enough traffic from your clients on your site to justify selling your widgets online. Suddenly you have a new set of requirements. If the company you've dealt with for web hosting services for the past two years has provided good customer server, and a good product why would you want to go elsewhere?
You wouldn't so try to look down the road a little if possible, with where your site might be in 6 months, 1 year, 5 years etc. Don't lose sleep on this point but we'd recommend you taking it into consideration.
